21st Eagle Amateur Sunday
SLIPPERY ROCK — A few openings remain for Sunday’s Butler Eagle County Amateur at Oakview Golf Club.
The field stood at 138 through Thursday morning for the 21st annual event, but wasn’t expected to stay that way.
“Things are still developing,” Eagle Amateur committee member Rob Voltz said. “The weather forecast looks great and I’m hoping we can get up over 150 or so again.”
Tee times are at 7:45 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. for the single-day, 18-hole event. Voltz said only two individual spots are open for the afternoon shift “but I can add another 20 to the morning round.”
Five-time Eagle Amateur champion Sean Knapp is back in the field this year after missing last year’s event to play in the U.S. Amateur.
Defending champion Mike Marron is back, along with former Eagle Amateur champs Jim Hepler, Dave Hungerman, Doug Knox and Voltz.
“I know there’s a lot of good players around and anyone can have a hot round and win this,” Knapp, 53, of Oakmont said. “I enjoy playing when something is on the line.
“What’s helped me in this event in the past is that I’ve played consistently and never really did anything that would take me out of it. But I haven’t played Oakview since I last won this tournament there.”
Knapp has won the last two Eagle Amateurs at Oakview, in 2012 and 2009.
“The greens are great there, but there are a couple of holes that can get you,” he said. “You could say I’ve managed to tiptoe through the tulips when I won there.
“So far this year, my ball striking and overall play ... It’s as good as it’s ever been. I’ve reduced my schedule a little bit and I’m looking forward to Sunday.”
Voltz said the championship and first flights “are well represented, about 50 golfers in each.
“The numbers are a little low for the second and third flights,” he said.
Approximately 12 women have registered, including defending champion Jenna Rinker of Slippery Rock, a longtime member at Oakview.
