Borough chosen for film scenes

HARMONY — A film star will be visiting the borough soon to shoot a movie.

Ewan McGregor, star of such films as the “Star Wars” trilogy, “Trainspotting” and “Moulin Rouge!” will be making his directorial debut for his upcoming film “American Pastoral,” and will shoot two scenes in the borough.

The Scottish award-winning actor also will star in the movie alongside Jennifer Connelly and Dakota Fanning.

A representative from Lakeshore Entertainment, the film’s production company, appeared before borough council Tuesday evening to talk about the movie.

“The directors (including McGregor) and I have been driving all around Western Pennsylvania looking for what they believe would be the perfect iconic town that would symbolize from a previous era” said Lakeshore representative Jason Calabro, a Pittsburgh native. “They of course have fallen in love with your town.”

The story follows Seymour “Swede” Levov (McGregor), a man with a perfect life and a former beauty queen for a wife (Connelly). However his relationship with his daughter (Fanning) becomes strained after she becomes involved with the counterculture movement and commits a deadly act of political terrorism.

“It flashes back from modern times to the late ‘50s and early ‘60s,” Calabro said.

The film, based on the Pulitzer-Prize winning novel by Philip Roth, is McGregor’s directorial debut.

Lakeshore Entertainment has produced such films as the “Underworld” series, “The Lincoln Lawyer” and “Million Dollar Baby.”

Both scenes are scheduled to be shot in Harmony on Oct. 5.

One is the explosion of a film company-constructed post office near the town square.

The other scene will take place on private property may be used for a scene.

For the day, Harmony will be known as “Old Rimrock” as it’s scripted.

About 75 cast and crew members from Lakeshore are expected to be on hand during shooting.

“The rest of the story kind of unfolds as the father is searching and trying to figure out ‘how could my sweet little girl have possibly been a part of this?’” Calabro said.

He said that Oct. 5 would be a good day to shoot since most businesses in the borough would be closed anyway on that Monday.

Calabro said film shooting would also involve people walking on Main and Mercer streets and give residents an opportunity to be involved with production.

“It’s pretty exciting,” he said.

Council approved the filming unanimously.
