PITTSBURGH — A water main break caused a sinkhole that swallowed two vehicles in Pittsburgh and cut service to dozens of homes.

Pennsylvania American Water Co. said the 30-inch main line was installed in the 1960s. It broke just before 9 a.m. Monday and affected customers in the city's Overbrook and Carrick neighborhoods.

No injuries were reported when a pickup truck and a trailer fell into the resulting sinkhole. A homeowner said his residence was also knocked off its foundation by the rushing water.

The water company said 10 homes were damaged and about 50 customers completely lost water service.

The company said Monday that during repairs even customers who didn't lose service may experience lower water pressure as a result.
