5 hurt in morning accident at Rt. 8, Branchton Road

SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — Five people were hurt, two seriously, in a two-vehicle crash at Route 8 and Branchton Road in the township at 8:09 a.m. today.

The vehicles involved were a Ram 1500 pickup driven by Thomas Grossman, a 63-year-old Brady Township man, and an SUV driven by Melissa Henthorn, no age available, of Brady Township with three passengers: her children, ages 5, 9 and 12, according to state police.

The truck was driving north on Route 8 and the SUV was driving east on Branchton Road when the collision occurred, police said.

Grossman was partially ejected. When emergency responders arrived, he was outside the driver’s side window, conscious but disoriented. He was flown by a helicopter to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Henthorn was flown by a helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian.

The children’s injuries were described as minor.

The helicopters landed at Unionville Fire Hall.

State police are investigating.

Slippery Rock Fire Department and Slippery Rock ambulance responded.

This intersection was the site of a two-vehicle crash on July 24. Three people had serious injuries and were taken to Pittsburgh hospitals and three others were taken to area hospitals.

A pickup truck traveling north on Route 8 struck the driver’s side of a car carrying five people as it crossed the intersection.

This also was the intersection where five members of a family were killed July 7, 2003, when a trucker ran the stop sign on Branchton Road and hit the car carrying the family.
