More burglary charges filed
CHICORA — A man suspected of breaking into eight businesses in Center Township waived his preliminary hearing Tuesday but not before state police filed one more case.
In his latest set of charges, Donald J. Stewart, 33, of Center Township is accused of breaking into his grandfather’s house in Fairview Township
He waived that case, too.
Stewart remained quiet for most of Tuesday’s court appearance before District Judge Lewis Stoughton in Chicora. He later was returned to Butler County Prison, where he’s being held on $65,000 bail.
Troopers on alert for a string of late-June and early-July break-ins in Center Township’s business corridor that includes the 1600 and 1700 blocks of North Main Street Extension, arrested the defendant July 9.
Investigators suspect Stewart that night was on his way to strike again. He confessed to his “intent to burglarize a business,” according to court documents.
He would keep talking to investigators, documents said, and eventually acknowledged a series of other break-ins at neighboring businesses in walking distance from his Sunset Drive home.
Police alleged the suspect between June 26 and July 7 targeted the A Bella Salon, Dairy Queen, Twice Loved Appliances, Salvation Thrift Store, China Gourmet, Prima Capelli and the Jiffy Mini Mart.
He is accused of breaking into the China Gourmet three times and Prima Capelli twice.
Stewart is also suspected of trying unsuccessfully to force open two coin machines at the Route 8 Car Wash.
His take in all the crimes was about $1,450, police said, much less than the more than $5,000 in damage he caused during his suspected burglary spree.
By July 16, police had charged him in all of the business break-ins. On Tuesday, they charged him with burglarizing his grandfather’s Fleeger Lane home in August 2014.
During the police investigation, the defendant confessed that he broke into James Fleeger’s home while the victim was visiting family in Alabama, documents said.
Stewart is accused of stealing more than $700 and two handguns.
After returning home and discovering the crime, Fleeger immediately suspected his grandson, documents said.
“The victim advised that Stewart is a known drug abuser and thief,” according to a police affidavit.
Police suspect the defendant’s drug habit also was the motivation for the other crimes.
In all, Stewart is charged with 11 counts of burglary, eight counts of trespass, two counts of attempted burglary, five counts of theft, 10 counts of criminal mischief and a lone count each of receiving stolen property and possessing an instrument of crime.
