HARRISBURG — Attorney General Kathleen Kane’s office has received a letter from Pennsylvania’s top Republican lawmakers seeking an investigation of Planned Parenthood after the release of an undercover video showing its national medical director discussing providing fetal body parts to researchers.

Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati and House Speaker Mike Turzai cite investigations in other states and request that Kane do the same.

The group that made the video says it proves Planned Parenthood is breaking federal law against selling human fetal tissue. Planned Parenthood says it legally helps women who want to donate fetal tissue for scientific research, not sell it commercially.

Planned Parenthood says its Pennsylvania health centers don’t participate in fetal tissue donation.

[naviga:h3]Ret. colonel pleads guilty in scheme[/naviga:h3]

PITTSBURGH — A colonel retired from an Air National Guard unit at Pittsburgh International Airport has pleaded guilty to charges he created a no-show military job for a civilian contractor.

The contractor, in turn, helped the colonel receive additional pay for days he didn’t work.

Prosecutors in Pittsburgh charged Col. Gerard Mangis last year with conspiracy, theft and fraud counts. He pleaded guilty in federal court Tuesday to conspiracy and will be sentenced Nov. 17.

The contractor pleaded guilty to his role in the scheme last year.

[naviga:h3]Tornado-damaged school torn down[/naviga:h3]

HAMBURG — Crews are razing a tornado-damaged school but hoping to salvage at least some of the items inside so it can be used later.

The demolition of the Blue Mountain Seventh-day Adventist Elementary School in Tilden Township could take about five days.

The building’s roof was torn off by an EF-1 tornado packing 100 mph winds on July 9.

Ed Cale, the project manager, says USS Achey is hauling away the metal for free. The Schuylkill County company processes metal and whatever it can make from recycling the metal will be returned to the school.
