MONROEVILLE — The last visible feature of a suburban Pittsburgh mall that appeared in George Romero’s 1978 zombie classic, “Dawn of the Dead,” is being given new life.

A small footbridge from the Monroeville Mall will be removed and taken to the Senator John Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh.

The footbridge is being taken down as part of a multimillion-dollar renovation meant to revitalize the mall, about 15 miles east of Pittsburgh.

Romero has said he chose a mall for much of the film’s undead action to serve as a social commentary on mindless commercialism.

It wasn’t immediately clear where or how the footbridge will be displayed at the museum, which focuses on Western Pennsylvania history.

“Dawn of the Dead” was a sequel to “Night of the Living Dead,” which was filmed near Evans City.
