Gov. Wolf to veto public pension bill today

HARRISBURG — Gov. Tom Wolf plans to veto a Republican bill to overhaul Pennsylvania's public pensions.

Wolf spokesman Jeffrey Sheridan says the governor will veto the bill today — one day before the deadline for making a decision.

Although Wolf had signaled that he did not support the bill, he did not immediately reject it. He confirmed that he would veto it in a live telephone interview today with a Pittsburgh radio station.

The Democrat says the bill sent to his desk is better than previous pension overhaul plans, but that it is not good for future state and school employees. The bill would have closed the traditional pension benefit for new hires and diverted them into a “hybrid” style retirement plan.
