Lunsford Helgert

Lunsford Jean “Pappy” Helgert, 96, of Adrian, Armstrong County, passed away Sunday at his home.

Born on Jan. 29, 1919, in Birdville, Harrison Township, Allegheny County, he was the son of Josef J. and Ada (Warner) Helgert.

Mr. Helgert retired in 1983 after 35 years from the Kittanning Brick Co., where he worked in the welding and maintenance department.

Mr. Helgert served in the U.S. Navy and the Marine Corps in the South Pacific in World War II.

He was a member of the Limestone-Reesedale Church of God. He was also a life member and twice commander of the VFW Post 863, a commander of Armstrong County Council, a charter member of the American Legion Post 325, and a second commander of the post of Cowansville. He was also a member of the Kittanning American Legion Post 122, a charter and life member of the Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department, serving in numerous offices. He was a Washington Township supervisor for 18 years and was chairman for 16 years. He was a Washington Township School director for 18 years for the East Brady School District, and he was a PA State forest fire warden for over 40 years. He served in the Armstrong Special Police Force statewide and the auxiliary police of Armstrong County. He also was a member of the Seneca Lodge 805 F.&A.M. and New Castle Consistory.

Mr. Helgert is survived by his son, Lunsford W. Helgert and his wife, Linda of Centerville, Pa.; his daughter, Bethea (Helgert) Trudgen and her husband, Richard, of Dubois, Pa.; his granddaughters, Stefanie Penvose and her husband, Jacob, of Dubois, and Kristi; two stepgrandsons, Richard Trudgen Jr. and Ryan Trudgen; one step-granddaughter, Tammy Messinger (Brian); two stepgrandsons, Richard Ayres (Debbie) and William Ayres (Melissa); three great-grandsons; two great-granddaughters; two step-great-grandsons; and one step-great-granddaughter.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Helgert was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Cecille E. (McCullough) Helgert; a grandson, Troy M. Helgert; two brothers, Lionel Helgert and Loui Helgert; and a sister, Mary Edwards.

HELGERT — Friends of Lunsford Jean “Pappy” Helgert, who died Sunday, May 24, 2015, will be received from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Limestone-Reesedale Church of God in Adrian, Pa.Services will be at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Donald Breghenti officiating. Interment will be at the Limestone Cemetery, Adrian, Pa.Arrangements are being handled by the Kennedy and Blodgett Funeral Home, Kittanning.
