BlueSox sweep twinbill

Zach Spangler earned a save in both ends of Butler’s Prospect League doubleheader sweep of host Richmond (Ind.) Tuesday night. The BlueSox tallied wins of 5-4 and 3-1.

A Seneca Valley graduate, Spangler worked one inning in the first game. Though he allowed his first run of the season on two hits, he stranded the potential tying run at first base as Butler earned its first win in six games.

Spangler relieved starter Larry Wood, who earned the pitching win after allowing three earned runs on nine hits in six innings of work. He struck out two and walked one.

Eight BlueSox players tallied at least one hit, with designated hitter Nick Rabat contributing a single, triple and one RBI.

Spangler took the mound with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning of the second game and again closed the door on the RiverRats (7-15).

Spangler came away from the twinbill with an ERA of 1.04 and now has seven saves this season.

Andre Jones and Tim Faix preceded Spangler on the mound, with the former getting the win following one earned run on three hits in 5 1/3 innings.

David Marcus went 2-for-3 and scored a pair of runs. He raised his team-leading batting average to .353.

The game was knotted at 1 until Butler scored the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth when Marcus came home on Jamie Switalski’s double.

Butler (10-13) plays at Terre Haute tonight.
