Henry James Smith, 90, of Cabot passed away Friday at the Good Samaritan Hospice.

Born Jan. 7, 1925, in Butler County, he was the son of the late Joseph Smith and Catherine (Greenert) Smith.

Henry was a World War II veteran. He served in the 9th Infantry Division as a staff sergeant. He served in Normandy, France, Belgium and Germany. He was wounded in Aachen, Germany. Henry was the recipient of the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the European, African, Middle Eastern Medal and the Campaign Medal with three Bronze Stars. He also received the Combat Infantry Badge. He served with the military policeman.

He worked as shop foreman for over at 30 years at the Butler County Mushroom Mine.

He was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Herman. Henry was a musician, playing the guitar for 30 years. He was a leader of the Southbend Band and he never missed a practice. He enjoyed yardwork, hunting, gardening and spending time with his family.

Surviving are his loving wife, Helen Smith, who he married Oct. 1, 1949; his children, James V. (Mary Ann) Smith of Lyndora, Victor L. (Denise) Smith of Cabot, Patty Jo (Alan) Kelley of Sarver and Carl P. (Marjorie) Smith of Butler; eight grandchildren, Jennifer, Carla, Kelly, Robert, Michael, Matthew, Jacob and Nicholas; and 23 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Elery Smith.

SMITH — Friends of Henry James Smith, who died Friday, May 1, 2015, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Fox Funeral Home, 410 W. Main St., Saxonburg.A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Herman with the Rev. Mark Pattock, OFM Cap., officiating.
