BlueSox turn 1st triple play on road

Butler graduate Cody Herald, now the hitting and first base coach for the Butler BlueSox, remains hopeful of playing professional baseball.

Aggressive baserunning, an error —and a well-timed triple play — helped the Butler BlueSox defeat the Chillicothe Paints 3-2 Sunday and salvage a split on the road in Prospect League action over the weekend.

The game was even at 1 in the sixth inning when the Paints had runners on first and second with nobody out. During a hit-and-run play, the next batter hit a line drive to second baseman Mark DeVita. DeVita flipped to shortstop Matt Hansen to force the runner off second base. Hansen fired to first baseman David Marcus to complete the first triple play in BlueSox history.

Behind 2-1 in the top of the eighth inning, Tymon White singled for Butler (2-3).

He stole second base and scored when Russell Clark reached on an error.

Grove City High graduate Alex Miklos, who finished with a game-high three hits, put the BlueSox ahead two batters later with a single.

Cody Jackson picked up the win in relief for Butler, throwing .a third of an inning.

BlueSox starting pitcher and Butler graduate Tyler Slepski threw the first 6.2 innings and allowed one run. He did not allow a hit until the sixth inning.

Butler limited Chillicothe (2-3) to four hits.

The Paints had no problems with their offense in Saturday’s game.

Chillicothe pounded out 12 hits in the game and eight in the first 2.1 innings to chase Butler pitcher Larry Wood from the game.

The Paints plated nine runs in the first three innings, all off Wood, and rolled to a 9-1 victory.

Butler finished with eight hits, but only plated a run on a single by Michael Arman in the ninth inning.

The BlueSox return home Tuesday and host West Virginia at 6:35 p.m. at Kelly Automotive Park.
