Truck crash this morning spills fuel on I-79

LANCASTER TWP — A tractor-trailer crash early this morning spilled about 125 gallons of diesel fuel onto Interstate 79 and closed at least one of the northbound lanes, authorities said.

The Butler County Hazardous Materials Team assisted state police and Harmony volunteer firefighters who were called to the wreck that happened just after 3:15 a.m.

Authorities said Joseph Paternostro of New York lost control of the rig while southbound about 2½ miles north of the Zelienople exit.

The tractor-trailer traveled into the median and ended in the northbound lanes, but not before rupturing its fuel tank. Police said there were no injuries.

Steve Bicehouse, the county's director of emergency services, said that a Hazmat crew was sent about 4:10 a.m. to help clean up the fuel spill

The crash remains under investigation.
