Blooms, tunes Summer flower show, jazz planned at Phipps

Phipps' South Conservatory, often the focal point of seasonal flower shows, features picture-perfect greenery and flowering plants.

PITTSBURGH — Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens showcases some of Earth's most curious plants — from spiky porcupine tomatoes to stinky devil's tongue arums — in the summer flower show.

Adding to the spectacle, the Butterfly Forest offers monarchs, zebra longwings and pipevine swallowtails.

Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and until 10 p.m. Fridays. Admission is $15 for adults, $14 for senior citizens and students, and $11 for children ages 2 to 18.

Phipps will host Jazz in the Garden, an evening of music in the outdoor garden, from 7 to 10 p.m. May 28. Performing will be the Benny Benack Big Band featuring classics by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr.

For tickets, call 412-622-6915, Ext. 6505.

Summer flower show offerings in the East Room include the pinkish red Grevillea “Bonfire.”
