State workers' union seeks OK for contract extension

HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania’s largest state-employee union is asking its 45,000 members to approve a one-year extension of their contract.

Gov. Tom Wolf and union chief David Fillman confirmed the proposal today.

Fillman says the union’s policy committee signed off on the proposal Friday. Ballots are being sent to the more than 200 locals in Council 13 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. The results are expected by May 1.

Fillman isn’t saying whether the extension would change employees’ pay and benefits, but described the agreement as “very brief.”

He says the idea is to provide “a breather” for Wolf as he pursues his plan to boost state taxes to close the budget gap, pump more money into education and reduce school property taxes.
