Not just a driving range

Rudy Vrankovich helps Patty Hesch Petrella with proper grip alignment at Rowan Driving Range.

CRANBERRY TWP — Driving by the facility, it looks like a typical driving range.

Yardage signs are up, tee boxes are evident, as are buckets of golf balls.

But the Rowan Road Driving Range isn’t just a place where golfers can improve their game. It’s a place where golfers can grow a game.

The range’s owner, Dave Petrella, has been a PGA professional for 31 years. His assistant, Rudy Vrankovich, is also a longtime pro. Rowan Road Driving Range has been there for 11 years.

“We do a lot of things people aren’t aware of until they stop in here,” Petrella said. “There aren’t many places in the area that offer the kinds of things we do.”

The range is a lighted facility that features two grass tee areas “which the accomplished golfers like to hit from,” Petrella said. It’s got room for as many as 50 individuals to hit balls at one time.

Petrella and Vrankovich also offer PGA instruction, custom clubs and club fitting, video swing analysis and on-site re-gripping and club repair.

“We’re here to help,” Vrankovich said. “I may wander outside, notice someone hitting the ball a certain way and give a little free tip on the spot.

“We want people to enjoy the game and if we can help that along in any way, from a golf tip, fixing a grip or repairing a club, we do it.”

The video instruction package includes a DVD for the golfer to take home, watch and learn from.

“A golfer’s fundamentals have to be good,” Vrankovich said. “Grips, stance, ball position and alignment ... Those are the fundamentals and that’s what we’re about.

“Of course, a good mental attitude always helps when playing this game,” Vrankovich added, laughing.

Petrella said he analyzes swing speed, ball speed and “smash factor,” the latter being the relationship between club-head speed, ball speed and how square the contact is with the ball.

“The golfer might have a good swing with proper technique, but if he’s not squaring up the ball properly, he’s not getting the most out of that swing,” Petrella said.

Rowan Road Driving Range also offers a summer junior golf clinic one day a week throughout the summer. The clinic runs for eight weeks for youths ages 6-17 and Petrella said it attracts 25 to 30 kids each year.

Each August, the facility hosts a customer appreciation day that includes free food, music and a free 10-minute lesson assessment.

The range received the Cranberry Eagle’s 2015 Community Choice Award for best driving range.

Vrankovich also helps run the First Tee program at Blackhawk Golf Course, a youth program for kids ages 4-17.

“I’m Dave’s assistant here. My duties are similar to an assistant pro’s at a golf club,” Vrankovich said. “I do what Dave needs me to do. Wait on customers, give a lesson, whatever needs done.

“What I like about working here is that it’s not all about the money. We’re going to make everybody happy who comes here. Their happiness on the golf course is what we’re about.”

The facility offers “value cards” for range balls: $50 for $60 worth of balls, $100 for $125 worth, $200 for $260 worth.

Lessons are available for as little as $40, video coaching for as little as $70.

“Every level of golfer, from beginner to pro, comes in here and benefits from it,” Petrella said of the range.
