Rita Slater

Rita Olds Slater, 84, of Mt. Chestnut passed away Monday at the Chicora Medical Center.

She was born on Aug. 20, 1930, in Milan, Mich., to the late Benjamin Gideon Olds and Marjorie Beebe Olds.

Mrs. Slater was a member of the First Baptist Church.

She worked as a secretary for Castle Rubber in East Butler for several years.

Mrs. Slater was involved with the prison ministry at the Mercer State Prison. Mrs. Slater taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school and also taught piano lessons. She enjoyed gardening, bird watching — especially hummingbirds — and loved music.

Mrs. Slater is survived by her husband, Paul Slater, who she married on Oct. 24, 2000; her three sons, Alan Slater and his wife, Alberta, of Prospect, Ken Slater and his wife, Linda, of Meridian and Paul Slater and his wife, Betsy, of Boardman, Ohio; her daughter, Elaine Spangler and her husband, Al, of Seaside Park, N.J.; her 10 grandchildren; her seven great-grandchildren; her sister, Sharon Ost of Milan, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Donald E. Slater, who passed away in 1984; her second husband, John

Hartzell, who passed away in 1995; and her grandson, Shawn Slater.Slater — The friends of Rita Olds Slater, who passed away Monday, March 2, 2015, will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at noon Thursday at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler, with the Rev. Al Spangler officiating. Private burial will take place in the Greenlawn Burial Estates.Memorial contributions may be made to the Prison Fellowship International, P.
