Philip Haag

Philip Leland Haag, 92, of Orchard Manor, Grove City, formerly of Slippery Rock Township, Butler County, passed away at 9:45 p.m. Sunday at the Grove City Medical Center.

He was born on Feb. 1, 1923, in Los Angeles, Calif., to the late John Andrew Haag and Ina Grace Weimer Haag.

He married Mildred “Millie” Viola Hanna on Jan. 1, 1946.

He retired in 1983 after 15 years of work at Slippery Rock University, where he worked as a storekeeper at the Field House.

He was an ordained Pentecostal pastor and was a truck driver for many years. His pastorate included congregations in Butler and later in Grove City.

He enjoyed listening to music and playing guitar. He and his wife, Millie, had a Radio Ministry Program broadcast in the early 1950s and 1960s out of Pittsburgh (WPIT) and Butler (WISR), where they shared the word of scripture, prayer, stories and music by playing accordion and guitar.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred “Millie” Haag of Slippery Rock; his two daughters, Carolyn R. Steckter and her husband, Fred, of Portland, Ore., and Rhonda Mae Albash and her husband, Hayder, of Columbus, Ohio; his three sons, James Leroy Haag of Butler, Gerald LaVerne Haag and his wife, Elaine, of Girard, Ohio, and Kenneth Eugene Haag and his wife, Caroline, of Slippery Rock; his brother, Nathan Haag and his wife, Gladys, of Emlenton, Cranberry Township, Venango County; his sister-in-law, Freida Haag of Grove City; his 12 grandchildren; his 14 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his eight brothers, Royal, Stanley, Paul, Timothy, Perry, Charles, Joseph and Fred, and his three sisters, Bertha, Ruth and Esther.

Haag — The family of Philip Leland Haag, who passed away Sunday, March 1, 2015, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock.Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the Pastor Mark Erskine of the Church of the Nazarene in Grove City officiating. Interment will be in Slippery Rock Cemetery.
