Jean Fergus Holben
Jean Fergus Holben, 90, of the Shenango Presbyterian Senior Care, New Wilmington, passed away at 9:46 p.m. Friday at her home.
Jean was born on March 28, 1924, in Slippery Rock, to the late Hugh Fergus and Sarah Hannah Beatrice Morrow Fergus.
She married James Hubert Holben on Dec. 8, 1945, and he passed away on Oct. 19, 2014.
She graduated from Slippery Rock High School in 1942. Later, she attended Clarion State Teachers College for one year before attending Butler Business College. She received a certificate there upon completion.
Jean was a member of the New Wilmington Presbyterian Church and a former member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Upper St. Clair, where she was active in Presbyterian Women and was a member of the church choir.
She was also active in the Upper St. Clair Women's Club and the Garden Club. An active member of church choirs wherever they lived, Jean had a beautiful soprano voice and sang many solos.
Survivors include her two daughters, Susan Cormany and her husband, Doug, of Pleasant Plain, Ohio, and Sara Holben and her husband, Bob Schminkey, of Chestertown, Md.; her two grandchildren, Justin Cormany and his wife, Kris, and Timothy Cormany and his wife, Alethea; her four great-grandchildren, Mason, Logan, Bentley and Weston; and her two sisters, Ruth Fergus Johnson of New Castle and M. Irene Fergus of New Castle.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her two sisters, Helen Barnes and Mary Judge, and her brother, James Fergus.
Holben— Visitation for Jean Fergus Holben, who passed away Friday, Feb. 27, 2015, will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday at the Smith Funeral Home, 310 W. Neshannock, Ave., New Wilmington.Additional visitation will take place from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Lisa Hickman officiating. Interment will follow at Slippery Rock Cemetery, Slippery Rock.Memorial contributions can be made to the Benevolent Fund at the Shenango Presbyterian Senior Care, 238 S.
