Garage owner, mechanic seriously injured after being pinned under car
PENN TWP — A Penn Township garage owner and one of his mechanics were seriously injured this morning when they were pinned under a car and hydraulic lift during a repair job.
John Brown, 58, owner of Brown’s Garage on Meridian Road, was flown by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital with head, neck and leg injuries, authorities said.
The other man, whose name was not immediately available, was taken by ambulance to Butler Memorial Hospital. The man, believed to be in his late 30s, also appeared to have head, neck and chest injuries.
The two were lowering a 2001 Honda Accord down from a 10-foot lift about 10 a.m. when one of the hydraulic hoses snapped.
The lift collapsed, causing the driver’s side of the car to slide off. Brown was under the front of the lift and the other mechanic was standing on the car’s driver side.
The owner of the Honda rushed in and lifted the car up by hand high enough to allow another mechanic to place a car jack under the driver’s door.
The move took some of the weight of the car off the injured mechanic.
The other mechanic quickly wrapped a chain under the car frame and pulled the car and lift off the injured mechanic and Brown.
Both men were conscious but in severe pain when emergency crews got there.
A PennDOT crew working on a road project nearby also hurried to the scene to help.
