Martin A. Zidek Sr.

Martin Zidek

Martin A. Zidek Sr., 89, of Meridian and also the Lowrie House, passed away early Saturday morning at the VNA Inpatient Hospice.

Born on July 13, 1925, in Lyndora, he was a son of the late Martin V. Zidek and Anna Uttla Zidek.

He graduated from high school and worked in Wheelworks and also Plant 2 maintenance for the Armco Steel Plant in Butler for 45 years, retiring in 1988.

Martin was a member of the St. Fidelis Roman Catholic Church, where he was active in church activities. He was on the Church Council, was an usher and also helped at the Lenten Fish Fries.

He had coached Little League Baseball in Meridian and was a member of the American Legion Post 778 in Lyndora, the Meridian boosters Club and the Meridian Fire Company, and was a lifetime member of the Slovak Sokol Society. He enjoyed collecting coins and spending time with his grandchildren.

A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy.

Surviving are his sons, Martin A. (Cindy) Zidek Jr. of Brookville and Terrence J. “Terry” (Margie) Zidek of Lyndora; his daughter, Beverly A. (John) Peffer of Lyndora; his four grandchildren, Jeremy (Lamis) Zidek, Brad Zidek, Brianna Peffer, and Savannah Peffer, and his brother, Albert Zidek of Ridge Crest, Calif.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Edna E. Evankovich Zidek, who he married on Aug. 18, 1951, and who died on July 15, 2001; his son, Randy Zidek; his two brothers, Joseph and Edward Zidek, and his sister, Mary Dunn.

Zidek — The friends of Martin A. Zidek Sr., who passed away Saturday, Feb. 14, 2015, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Geibel Funeral Home, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler.The Bereavement Committee of the St. Fidelis Parish will meet at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home for a vigil service.A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at the St. Fidelis Roman Catholic Church, 125 Buttercup Road, Meridian, with the Rev.
