Teen arrested after ramming police car

CONNOQUENESSING TWP — A Butler Township teenager was arrested Sunday afternoon after he deliberately backed into a state police cruiser, causing several thousands of dollars in damage, authorities said.

No one was injured but 18-year-old Luke O. Baranchak ended up in the Butler County Prison on felony and other charges.

Police were called about 4:30 p.m. to a home in the 800 block of Whitestown Road in Connoquenessing Township for a reported domestic dispute.

While a trooper was conducting interviews as part of his investigation, according to a police affidavit, Baranchak became angry and drove into the officer’s marked patrol car, a 2014 Ford Taurus.

Cpl. Timothy Morando later asked the defendant what happened.

“Baranchak advised that he was upset with the situation so he put his vehicle in reverse and rammed the police car,” documents said.

Morando in court papers noted that it would cost between $3,000 and $5,000, “maybe more,” to repair the cruiser.

District Judge Lewis Stoughton arraigned Baranchak on a felony charge of institutional vandalism and misdemeanor charges of criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.

The defendant was released on his own recognizance following arraignment.

A preliminary hearing is set for March 24 at the office of District Judge Wayne Seibel in Evans City.
