Transit authority to install cameras at park and ride
JACKSON TWP — The Butler Transit Authority hopes video surveillance will stop tractor-trailers from turning around in its renovated park and ride on Route 528.
The authority board Tuesday night approved buying six cameras for the lot at a cost of $13,000.
John Paul, executive director of the authority, said he hopes the cameras will be installed within 30 days.
A nearly $2 million project to expand the park and ride was completed in June 2014. It increased the parking spaces from 82 to 335.
But Paul said tractor trailers have been using the lot to turn around in.
“We’re fearful it will damage the pavement,” he said. “They’ve already run over signs and caused ruts in the grassy areas.”
Paul said the rigs have run over the lot’s “do not enter” signs twice.
Rigs using the lot has been a problem since the renovation project.
“It just happened again last week,” Paul said.
Township officials this year said the problem at the park-and-ride lot likely comes from truck drivers who are driving north on Interstate 79 and get off at Exit 83 without realizing that Route 528 has a 10-ton weight limit.
The drivers then pull into the lot to figure out directions or to turn around and get back on the interstate via Route 19.
The police can ticket trucks driving on Route 528, though there is an exception for local deliveries.
The cameras will cost the authority about $1,500 per year to maintain. Funding for the cameras come from state and federal grants, Paul said.
