City police investigate break-in, fire

Butler police and firefighters were called to a reported break-in and fire Thursday afternoon at a home in the 300 block of Oak Street in the city’s Institute Hill section.

No one was injured and damage was minimal, authorities said.

The man who lives there told investigators that he returned home about 4:40 p.m. and found the house filled with smoke.

City police said the man also reported that someone had broken into the house. Officers canvassed the neighborhood, asking residents if they saw anything at or near the time of the fire.

The investigating officer had not filed a report as of this morning and police had no other information.

Fire Chief Nick Ban said this morning the fire was a small one in the living room. Firefighters extinguished the flames, which left only a portion of the carpeting burned.

Ban said the investigation of the cause of the fire is being handled by city police, and said he could not say anything else.
