Chorale to tell Easter story in song
JEFFERSON TWP — Concordia residents and members of the community will tell the story of Easter through song.
The Concordia Alleluia Chorale invites the public to attend its annual Easter cantata performance at 7 p.m. March 31 in the Haven I dining room, 112 Marwood Road (entrance 2A).
This year's performance, titled “Believe, and Live!,” is written and directed by Concordia Haven III resident Carol Oliver.
The story is based on scripture and tells the story of Easter through John's eyes based on The Gospel of John. John was not only one of Jesus' 12 disciples, but along with his brother James and Peter, one of the three disciples who were closest to Jesus among the 12.
The program encourages audience participation, inviting the audience to quote scripture, sing hymns and pray along with the chorale.
“We always try to include old hymns in our prelude,” Oliver said, “the ones we know are familiar and dear to our audience's hearts. We want everyone to be able to sing along.”
The chorale is composed of about 30 Concordia independent living residents, personal care residents and community members.
Haven I resident the Rev. Ralph Storm will play the part of John and narrate throughout the program.
The piece will feature a variety of resident soloists, as well as the accompaniment of trombonist Carl Myers, one of Concordia's bus drivers.
Oliver first began to incorporate narration into the Concordia Alleluia Chorale's cantatas in spring 2014, when she adapted Charles Swindoll's “Suddenly One Morning” into narration to accompany the Easter performance.
“The chorale members loved the idea of telling a story with their performance,”Oliver said. “It was engaging and dramatic,something that really captured the audience's attention.”
