Driver hurt as Jeep sides into building
CLAY TWP — A Butler area woman was hurt this morning when she lost control of her sport utility vehicle and crashed into a building on Route 308.
The woman, whose name was not immediately available, was able to get out of her Jeep Cherokee and called 911 for help. She had no visible injuries but complained of pain, emergency crews said.
Slushy road conditions from melting snow and freezing temperatures were a factor in the wreck just after 4 a.m., according to Chief Reid Campbell of the West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department.
“There was anywhere from 4 to 6 inches of water and slushy ice across the road,” he said.
The woman was traveling north when she lost control of the Jeep and slid across the southbound lane. The driver's side of the vehicle hit the building that is a long-since-closed gas station just south of West Sunbury.
She was taken by ambulance to Butler Memorial Hospital to be checked out, authorities said.
The building had minor damage, and the car had to be towed.
Campbell said that poor road maintenance, which prevented adequate runoff of the melting snow and caused unnecessary ponding, likely was a factor in the crash.
“The berm,” he noted, “is higher than the road.”
