Shooting in Butler Township's Lyndora section
Two troopers shot at a man who pointed a semi-automatic rifle at them in Butler Township’s Lyndora section early this morning, authorities said.
The suspect, who authorities did not immediately identify, was hit at least once in the hand or forearm. The man took off running into woods but was caught a short time later.
He remains a Pittsburgh hospital with injuries not believed to be life threatening, state police said. The shooing on Bessemer Avenue shortly before 5 a.m. came after the man allegedly threatened to kill a family member and “took a swipe” at the same relative with a knife, according to state police investigators. The suspect later got a carbine rifle and pointed it at the family member, police.
The man fled and apparently fired the gun into the air or into an occupied home. Troopers heard the radio call and confronted the suspect, who was armed with a “carbine-type rifle,” police said in a news release. “The troopers ordered him to drop the weapon,” police said. “Instead of dropping the weapons, the subject raised the rifle and was taking aim (at) the troopers at a distance of about 60 yards.”
One trooper filed at least two round with an AR-15 patrol rifle. The other trooper fried at least one round with his .45-caliber service pistol. Investigators said they expect to charge the man at the end of their ongoing investigation. The troopers involved in the incident, meanwhile, have been placed on temporary administrative duties, pending completion of the investigation.
