For $215,000 you can buy Mars swimming pool
MARS — The Mars pool is for sale for $215,000 after it has been closed due to a lack of memberships, increased operating costs, and required repairs.
Nichole Fromlak, who has been on the pool board for the past seven years, the last three as treasurer, said the organization’s effort to fundraise and increase its membership numbers were not enough to raise the money necessary to open the pool this summer.
The pool at 591 Stanton Ave. has 4.5 acres in a residential zoning district, a three-room building with a fireplace, four bathrooms and, of course, a huge swimming pool.
Fromlak said when the property sells, the pool board will pay off the Mars National Bank loan taken out a few years ago to fund the addition of a new multipurpose room to the single-story pool house. She said the pool board owes the bank about $150,000.
The other revenue from the sale will pay remaining utility bills and then be donated to the Adams Area Fire District, the Mars Public Library and the Mars Historic and Landmark Society.
She said there are no bids so far on the pool property, which went up for sale Feb, 9.
Borough council President Mike Fleming said while some council members advocated helping the pool financially, the borough has too many responsibilities and projects in other areas.
“I’m not sure how much we can do,” Fleming said.
