Celebration costs UNC football $27K

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Paint damage from North Carolina’s victory celebration at Duke in November cost more than $27,000 in repairs.

About $22,000 went to replace the locker-room carpet, according to documents released after records requests from media outlets. Repairs also removed “UNC” written on walls and paint from the practice field.

The rivalry winner traditionally spray-paints its blue on the Victory Bell.

UNC Athletic director Bubba Cunningham and coach Larry Fedora wrote checks to split the $27,170.44 total.

SD State retired Gwynn’s number

SAN DIEGO — San Diego State retired the No. 19 worn by coach Tony Gwynn, who died of cancer in June.

The ceremony was held Friday night before the Aztecs played Valparaiso in the season opener.

Chris Gwynn said two of his brother’s best traits were humility and selflessness.

“I know he knew he had a big effect on people, but I don’t think he understood how great it was,” Chris Gwynn said.

Gwynn coached the Aztecs for 12 years after his 20-year career with the Padres.

NFL requests info in Hardy trial

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The NFL has filed a petition in North Carolina court to have the protective order lifted from Greg Hardy’s trial last July in which the Panthers defensive end was convicted on two counts of domestic violence.

Although the case against Hardy was dismissed Monday when he appealed, he still faces a possible suspension from the league.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said Friday in an email that the league is asking the courts to allow them to inspect and copy all material from the original bench trial.

The information is currently under seal until further order from the court.
