Donald E. 'Tommy' Thompson

Donald E. “Tommy” Thompson, 83, of Butler passed away at 8:42 a.m. Saturday at the VNA Inpatient Hospice.

He was born on Aug. 11, 1931, in Little Washington, to the late John Thompson and Florence Thompson Thompson.

Mr. Thompson was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving in the Korean and Vietnam wars, as well as being stationed in Japan and Thailand. He retired as a senior master sergeant with 28 years of service.

Mr. Thompson then went to work at Pratt Whitney in Florida for 17 years.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 117, and he enjoyed cars, swimming, scuba diving and flying.

Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife, Joan V. Thompson, who he married on Oct. 20, 1951; his four sons, Scott Thompson and his wife, Dottie, of Cranberry Township, Brian Thompson of Butler, Dale Thompson and his wife, Sandy, of Medford, Ore., and Alan Thompson and his wife, Teri of McKeesport; his two daughters, Donna Spinhirne and her husband, James, of Albuquerque, N.M., and Charisse Bunyan and her husband, Leroy, of Renfrew; his 13 grandchildren; and his 17 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Karen Padglek for everything she has done for “pap” over the years and to the American Legion Riders.

Thompson — The friends of Donald E. “Tommy” Thompson, who passed away Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler.Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Pastor Ken Tack of the St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Knox, officiating.Officers and members of the American Legion Post 117, the American Legion Post 778 and the VFW Post 249 will conduct military honors following the service at the funeral home.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Yellow Ribbon Girls, 1328 Woodside Ave., Ellwood City, PA 16117.Online condolences can be given at www.thompson-miller.com.
