Driver's medical issue may have cause crash that injured 4

BUTLER TWP — A man with an apparent medical problem drove his car about 60 feet into a hair salon bustling with customers Thursday.

Four people, including the driver of the Chrysler Sebring, were injured in the crash at Hair Specialists II in Butler Township’s Moraine Pointe Plaza.

The accident occurred at 11:52 a.m.

Officials believe the male driver, who was not immediately identified, suffered a medical condition that caused him to drive from the busy parking lot, through the business’s outside glass wall and colliding with a hair dresser station and a waiting area. The vehicle came to a stop in a bank of hair dryer chairs.

People inside the salon, including about eight female employees and an unknown amount of customers in various stages of hair care, were too shaken up to talk about the crash. But Emily Coulter, 24, who was working at Misty Nails a few doors away, said she heard the crash and ran to the building in seconds.

“It was just a really big boom,” said Coulter, who described people at that time as grabbing towels to stop bleeding cuts and cell phones to call loved ones.

Steve Shinsky, owner of the hair salon, said he was told by his employees the person most seriously injured, an elderly woman, who was seated at a hair station near the wall.

Other people inside the store were struck by the car or hit by flying glass. One man, witnesses said, was pushed up onto the hood of the car.

After emergency responders cared for the injured people, crews used a chain and a tow truck to pull the car back out of the building.

There was no immediate estimate on damage to the structure. But Shinsky said he is insured and intends to make arrangements to reopen as quickly as possible.
