William John 'Bill' Evans

William John “Bill” Evans, 72, of Butler passed away Tuesday evening at the VNA Inpatient Hospice.

Born on May 18, 1942, in Butler, he was a son of the late L. Charles Evans and Frances L. Detweiller Evans.

Bill graduated from Butler High School in 1960, then received an associate degree from Butler County Community College.

He worked as a project engineer for the Pullman Standard Car Co. in Butler from 1964 until 1982 when the plant closed. He then went to work at the VA Butler Healthcare Medical Center from 1984 until retiring in 2004.

Bill attended the Trinity Lutheran Church in Butler and was a life member of the DAV, the American Legion Post 117 and the Amateur Trap Shooting Association. He enjoyed bowling, golfing and trap shooting.

A veteran of the Vietnam War, he served in the U.S. Navy. Following that, he was in the U.S. Army National Guard and also the U.S. Army Reserve for 26 years total service, reaching master sergeant.

Surviving are his wife, Donna J. Riffer Evans, who he married on Nov. 29, 1986; his son, Barret J. Evans of Butler; his grandson, Devlin; his brother, Charles P. (Mary Jane) Thompson of Butler; his sister, Darlene M. (Bill) Daum of Butler; his sister-in-law, Ginny Thompson of Butler; his brother-in-law, Bill (Cecelia) Riffer of Williamsburg, Va.; and his numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Frank B. Thompson, and his nephew, Corey J. Daum.

Evans — The friends of William John “Bill” Evans, who passed away Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at theGeibel Funeral Home, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler.Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 120 Sunset Drive, Butler, with the Rev.
