SRU women top UPJ, 88-78

The Slippery Rock University women’s basketball team picked up some ground in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division race with an 88-78 win over the University of Pittsburgh Johnstown on the road.

The Rock (8-12, 4-12) is now one game behind Mercyhurst and Seton Hill for the final bid in the conference tournament.

D’Asia Chambers led SRU with 24 points, while Taylor Siggers (17 points) and Breanna Gross (16) also scored in double figures.

UPJ led 42-35 at halftime and The Rock didn’t tie the game until at 72 until there was 5:42 left in regulation. A layup by Siggers then sparked a 6-0 run that gave SRU the momentum to close the win.

Men’s basketball

Slippery Rock University stumbled in its second straight PSAC West contest, falling to UPJ 77-59 on the road.

The Mountain Cats led 34-24 at halftime and The Rock (15-7, 10-6) couldn’t find the offense to keep up.

SRU shot 34.9 percent (22-of-63) from the field. Antonio Butler led the Rock with 15 points.

CCAC Boyce 89, Butler County Community College 74 — Dom Pusateri scored 28 points and Austin Miller added 18, but the Pioneers fell against CCAC.

Track

Slippery Rock University women’s track team earned 24 PSAC qualifying marks and one NCAA provisional qualifying mark at the SPIRE Midwest Open last week at Geneva, Ohio.

Kaitlyn Clark hit the NCAA provisional mark by clearing a season-best 3.65 meters in the pole vault.

On the men’s side, Trevor Miller hit an NCAA provision qualifying mark with a throw of 16.36 meters in the shotput.
