John W. 'Red' Donaldson

John Donaldson

John W. “Red” Donaldson, 90, formerly of Middlesex Township, Valencia, passed away Monday morning at the Evergreen Nursing Center in Harmony.

Born on April 3, 1924, in Callery, he was the son of the late Richard E. and Florence M. Monahan Donaldson.

Red had been a machine shop superintendent for the Heppenstall Co. in Pittsburgh for 33 years and later worked as a clerk for Pfeifer Hardware in Mars until he was age 83. He enjoyed interacting with customers and co-workers.

He loved his family dearly and especially enjoyed his great-grandchildren, who made him laugh and smile every time he saw them. He also enjoyed golfing with his son.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bakerstown, the Corinthean Lodge 573 in Pittsburgh and the Syria Temple and Consistory.

Red had been a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Surviving are his son, John W. Donaldson II and his wife, Betty, of Freedom; his grandchildren, Justin Donaldson and his wife, Denise, and Adam Donaldson and his wife, Jenny; and his great-grandchildren, Teresa Ann, Isaac Marcus, Abby Lynn and Luke Adam.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Violet M. Wolfarth Donaldson, who he married on Nov. 17, 1945, and who died on June 14, 2011, and his siblings, George, James, Florence and Richard.

Donaldson — The friends of John W. “Red” Donaldson, who passed away Monday, Dec. 15, 2014, will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the McDonald-Aeberli Funeral Home, 238 Crowe Ave., Mars.Funeral services will be private.
