Everyone focuses on the best.

The best this, the best that.

But who’s the worst? That doesn’t get talked about nearly as much, but is just as fun to talk about.

We had a discussion in the Butler Eagle sports department about which team was the worst to play in a Super Bowl.

It was an intriguing question.

Many teams were chosen with varied reasoning.

Here is the list I came up with and why:

New York Jets, Super Bowl III. I know what you’re thinking. What in the name of Broadway Joe are the Jets doing on this list? They won, didn’t they, toppling the mighty Baltimore Colts and making everyone in the nation accept the AFL as a worthy league.

Sure, all that is true. But the Jets really weren’t a very good team.

Joe Namath was below average that season, completing less than 50 percent of his passes and throwing 17 interceptions to just 15 touchdown passes.

The Buffalo Bills won just one game that season — against the Jets.

The Oakland Raiders were clearly the best team in the AFL that season.

Los Angeles Rams, Super Bowl XIV — The Rams nearly lost the division title to the New Orleans Saints, finished 9-7 and then eked out a 9-0 win over Tampa Bay in the NFC Championship Game to meet the Steelers in the Super Bowl.

Want further proof? Two words: Vince Ferragamo.

New England Patriots, Super Bowl XX — The Patriots were the third place team in the AFC East, squeaked into the playoffs and then won three straight road games to reach the Super Bowl.

Their reward? Irving Fryar gets stabbed in the leg and they have to play the 1985 Bears.

The Pats had about as much of a chance as a buffet has against Refrigerator Perry.

San Francisco 49ers, Super Bowl XXIII. What? Blasphemy!

But true.

This was perhaps the weakest 49ers team of their dynasty. They were 6-5 after 11 weeks and were on the outside of the playoff picture looking in. One could argue two teams in their own division, the Rams and Saints, were better in 1988.

New York Giants, Super Bowl XLII. I almost left them off the list because they beat the undefeated Patriots in the Super Bowl, but it’s the worst teams to reach the Super Bowl, not to win it.

The Giants barely made the playoffs, but got hot at the right time.

Arizona Cardinals, Super Bowl XLIII. Like the Rams in 1979, the 2008 Cards were 9-7. They scored 427 points. They gave up 426.

Kurt Warner was awesome, but the leading rusher had just 514 yards and the defense was terrible.

And they were a Santonio Holmes tightrope catch away from winning.
