Thomas P. Romett
Thomas P. Romett of Butler passed away Thursday following an illness.
Dr. Romett was the beloved husband of Dr. Ellen Romett, who survives him.
Tom was born on June 3, 1935, son of the late John and Erma Sauro Romett of Northern Cambria.
He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Dr. Romett was a graduate of Clarion University and held a doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh. He had a long and distinguished career as an education administrator. He served as the assistant superintendent of the Butler Area and Pennsbury school districts and as acting superintendent of the Karns City, Moniteau and Laurel school districts.
Tom was a recognized expert in school administration and finance, and was appointed by the Pennsylvania Department of Education as chairman of the Board of Control in various distressed school districts throughout the state, including Woodland Hills and Sto-Rox. He also taught undergraduate and graduate courses at the University of Pittsburgh and Slippery Rock University. Tom was honored by the American and the Pennsylvania Associations of School Business Officials for his long and distinguished career.
Dr. Romett was very active in the community through the years and held numerous offices in a wide variety of organizations. He served as a board member of the Western Pennsylvania Blue Cross/Blue Shield Association, the United Way of Butler County, the Mental Health Association and the Optimist Club. He was an active parishioner at the St. Paul Roman Catholic Church.
In addition to his strong commitment to family and community, Tom loved national and international travel, reading finance books, watching sports and playing with his Airedales, Teddy and Louie.
In addition to his wife, Tom is survived by his cherished son, Jonathan (Tricia); his stepchildren, Todd Fair (Melissa) and Sarah Edwards (Thomas); his grandchildren, Julia and Landon Romett and Frederick Edwards; his brother, Sylvester (Kathryn) of Northern Cambria; and his 30 nieces and nephews.
Tom was preceded in death by his brothers, John, Joseph, Gregory and James, and his sister, Roselyn Bush.
The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of the Butler VNA Inpatient Hospice for their outstanding and compassionate care.
Romett — The friends of Thomas P. Romett, who passed away Thursday, Dec. 4, 2014, may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Martin Funeral Home, 429 Center Ave., Butler. Additional visitation will be from 9 a.m. to the funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Saint Paul Roman Catholic Church, 128 N. McKean St., Butler. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Butler.Members of the St. Paul Catholic Women and Christian Mothers will meet at 9:35 a.m. Saturday at the church to recite the rosary.The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Tom's memory to St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, or the Butler County Humane Society.For more information, please visit www.martinfh.net.
