Sylvester 'Sid' Jacob Geibel

Sylvester “Sid” Jacob Geibel, 89, of Chicora went to be with the Lord at 6:29 p.m. Monday.

Born Aug. 4, 1925, in Butler, he was the son of Sylvester H. Geibel and Maltida Holly Geibel.

Sid served in active duty in World War II from August 1943 to March 1946 as a machinist 1st class in the U.S. Navy. He served on the LST 138 during the Normandy invasion.

Sid, along with his wife, Rita, went to many local schools to educate students about World War II.

He worked at Daman Industries in Bradys Bend. He established his own business, S.D. & J. Battery Distributors, with his son, Dennis, in 1975 and retired from the business in the early 1990s.

He was a member of the Dierken-Ritzert Post American Legion 0642 in Chicora, the VFW Post 7876 in Chicora and the Knights of Columbus 866 in Butler. He was also a member of Mater Dolorosa Roman Catholic Church in Chicora.

Sid married Rita M. Strobel Geibel in 1949 and together they had three children, Sidney John, Dennis Charles and Jeffery Lee.

He is survived by Sidney John and his wife, Cindy, of Bolivar, Ohio, and Dennis Charles and Sandra Lee of Chicora; his grandchildren, Aimee Geibel, Reid (Kristin) Geibel, Courtney (John) Levengood, Heather (Jeremy) Gingerich, Kara (Kyle) Wood, Brittni Geibel, and Emileigh Geibel; and his seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey L. Geibel, who died in July 1976, and his wife, Rita M. Strobel Geibel, who died in January 2008.

Geibel— Family and friends of Sylvester “Sid” Jacob Geibel, who passed away Monday, Dec. 8, 2014, will be received from 9 a.m. to a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mater Dolorosa Roman Catholic Church, 409 N. Main St., Chicora, with the Rev. Rick Thompson, pastor, officiating.
