Jean Smitmans Swartzlander
Jean Smitmans Swartzlander, 85, of Fenelton passed away Monday at Good Samaritan Hospice in Cabot.
She was born on July 3, 1929, in Penn Township, Allegheny County, to the late Herman and Anna Boyle Smitmans.
She did clerical office work and was a salesperson for the Jacques Seed Corn Co. before retiring from the Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Butler.
She previously attended the New Beginnings Free Methodist Church in Butler.
She graduated from Chicora High School in 1948.
Jean enjoyed needlecraft, cross stitching and needlepoints. She was an avid reader.
Survivors include her daughter, Susan (Mervin) Claypoole of Worthington; her son, Russell (Jane) Swartzlander of Rittman, Ohio; her grandchildren, Melody (Michael) Scardina of Fenelton, Mandy Claypoole of Cabot, Sally Swartzlander of Rittman, Ohio, and Misty (Ryan) Thurber of Fenelton; her eight great-grandchildren, Anthony, Henry, Lydia, Violet, Dylan, Charlotte, Nolan, and Penelope; her sister, Hilda Mellish of Chicora, and her numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Russell F. Swartzlander Sr., whom she married on Sept. 3, 1948, and who passed away in 2005; her four brothers, Herman, Carl, Hagen and Roland Smitmans, and her sister, Grace Chaffin.
Swartzlander — The friends of Jean Smitmans Swartzlander, who passed away Monday, Dec. 8, 2014, will be received from 6 p.m. until services at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the F. Duane Snyder Funeral Home, 119 Bear St., Worthington, with the Rev. Matt Perkins officiating.
