SR In Bloom plans for spring
SLIPPERY ROCK — Volunteers for Slippery Rock In Bloom are getting ready for another year of work.
On Oct. 26, about 60 volunteers planted 10,000 tulip bulbs around the borough, primarily in Memorial, Gateway and Roxy parks as well as along Main and Franklin streets. This was the most flowers planted for the project yet.
Volunteers ranged from local residents to Slippery Rock University students and high school students.
“It was amazing,” said Cindi Dillon, Slippery Rock In Bloom co-chairman.
Slippery Rock In Bloom, part of America In Bloom, started in 2010 as the Slippery Rock Rotary Club’s president’s project. America In Bloom is a national community improvement initiative.
For the past few years, the group has worked to plant flowers and make other improvements, with judges coming in the early summers to visit and rate the effort.
America In Bloom judges visited the borough in June.
In October, Slippery Rock In Bloom improved its rating and received an award for “most welcoming town entrance” at the America In Bloom National Symposium and Awards in Philadelphia. It also received special recognition for community involvement.
The group handed out four “green thumb” awards to people and businesses recently.
“They’re doing something to improve their outside space,” Dillon said.
This is the second year the group has given out awards.
“It energizes people to become involved,” Dillon said.
Slippery Rock In Bloom and Slippery Rock Development are working to get new trees for downtown. The Cleveland pear trees currently downtown have suffered from a blight. Several already have been replaced.
The group is in the process of planning its spring plantings.
Dillon said the group is planning on having a fundraising event in the spring, but she said the group is not sure where it will be held yet.
