John D. Hough

John Hough

John D. Hough, 66, of Butler passed away Saturday at VNA Inpatient Hospice of a rapidly progressing neurological disease.

He was born on April 3, 1948, in Charleroi, to the late David and Frances Christner Hough. John grew up on the family farm in Fayette City.

He served his country in the Army during the Vietnam War, stationed in South Korea.

He then graduated from Slippery Rock University with a Bachelor of Science degree in education. He worked for many years for the CSX Railroad, then at AK Steel, where he retired in 2007.

John's passion in life was music. He was known throughout Butler County as a fine bass guitar player and singer, having been in numerous bands since he was 16. His musician friends were a lively part of his life and he so enjoyed music.

John had a sharp sense of humor and was full of stories. He loved history, astronomy, camping, motorcycling, bicycling, the outdoors, and especially traveling the United States with his wife and best friend, Rhonda. His favorite states were West Virginia and Florida, and he enjoyed remote and beautiful places most of all. He loved natural places and visited many state and national parks. John liked scenic rides on his motorcycle, seafood and good beer.

He was happy to know his two little grandbabies, Norah and Ellie. He was a very fun and interesting personality.

John met Rhonda Lou Myers Hough at Lakeview High School in 1965, and they married in Sandy Lake on June 23, 1973. They lived in Highfield and then in Meridian where they raised their two kids, Mike and Julie. John was a simple, humble man who enjoyed sitting around a campfire sharing memories, telling stories and gazing at the stars.

He will be missed by so many friends, and especially by his wife. He had a great laugh and made us laugh too with his witty nature.

John is survived by his wife, Rhonda Myers Hough; his son, Michael Hough and his wife, Natalie, of Crafton; his daughter, Julie Hough and her boyfriend, Chad Hanson, of Pittsburgh; his two granddaughters, Norah Lou Hanson and Elliette Ann Hough, and his two sisters, Grace Martin and her husband, Ron, of Fayette City and Flossie Cunningham and her husband, Lee, of Farrell.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his two sisters, Dorothy Coller and Kathy Mathay.
