Holiday gift suggestions for runners
It’s the height of holiday shopping season and you have a runner on your list. Here are a few suggestions to add cheer to your athlete’s day.
What do puppies and running shoes have in common? They both make really bad Christmas gifts. It’s never a good idea to surprise someone with a new puppy on Christmas morning. And, much as runners love shoes, it’s not a good idea to put a pair under the Christmas tree.
Runners do love shoes, but they usually love the ones currently cradling their feet the best. There’s no guarantee that the same brand (or even a duplicate model) will have the identical feel.
Instead, give a gift card to your runner’s favorite running store so they can find the perfect fit. If you’re lucky, maybe you’ll get to tag along on the shopping trip.
You can run in just about any clothing, but why wouldn’t you want comfort and safety? Most runners I know have tons of t-shirts, but would appreciate a gift of runner-specific clothing such as reflective vest, breathable fabric jacket or warming socks. Remember to include a gift receipt since apparel sizes can run small.
Some runners won’t take a step without music. Create a playlist in your runner’s favorite music genre that lasts at least as long as their weekly long run.
Songs with rhythm in the range of 120 to 140 beats per minute are ideal for general workouts. You can figure out BPM yourself or download a mix within those parameters.
You can’t run all the time. You have to eat and drink, too. Assemble a running-themed gift basket for a quick pre-run breakfast — peanut butter, jelly, breakfast bars, instant oatmeal, etc. or post-run recovery — chocolate milk boxes, packaged cookies, crackers, or vegetable chips, lower alcohol beer (over age 21, please), cheese or meat sticks.
Don’t overlook convenient meals for busy runners. Look for pre-cooked and seasoned grains such as quinoa, wild or brown rice. There are plenty of nutritious sauces and soups for comfort and warmth against winter’s chill.
Rest goes well with recovery. A gentle massage following a long training run speeds recovery and a sports massage in the week prior to a big race can boost performance. Visit a few establishments to be sure they have experience working with runners before purchasing a gift certificate.
You can’t run 24/ 7. Give a gift subscription or renewal to a running or fitness magazine. Many publications are now available in digital form as well as print.
Reading a good book is the antidote to our social media/ headline-driven information age. If your runner is performance oriented, a training guide such as Owen Anderson’s Running Science or Hansons Half-Marathon Method: Run your Best Half-Marathon the Hansons Way will offer motivation for spring training.
Running isn’t all about the legs. Dig deeper into the psyche of running with The Runner’s Guide to the Meaning of Life by Amby Burfoot or New York Times bestseller What I Talk About When I Talk About Running by Haruki Murakami. Or check out the re-released classic Running and Being by the late running sage George Sheehan.
It’s hard to read a book together, but how about a movie? The film Unbroken, the incredible true story of Olympic athlete Louis Zamperini, debuts this Christmas. Or choose from one of running.competitor.com’s list of the 25 Greatest Running Movies Ever for movie night at home.
Don’t forget the most priceless and treasured gifts (not just for runners) — the gifts of companionship, support, motivation and acceptance. Then maybe you can pick out that puppy together after the holidays are past.
