SRU moves to 3-0 in non-conference play

ERIE — Slippery Rock University’s mens basketball team used a big run in the first half to stay unbeaten in non-conference play, beating Alderson Broaddus (W.Va.) 80-70 Friday night at Gannon University’s Hammermill Center.

The Rock, which is now 4-1 overall and 3-0 in non-conference play, opened the game up with a 15-0 run over the defending Great Midwest Athletic Conference champs.

Cornelius Brown led SRU against the Battlers with 23 points and nine rebounds. Antonio Butler also scored 23 points to go along with five rebounds.

Jamal Gatall joined them in double figures with 11 points. SRU’s big run started when Malcolm Richardson put in a layup to put The Rock ahead 20-15 with 9 minutes, 36 seconds left in the first half.

SRU closed the run when Butler made two free throws to extend the lead to 33-14 with 4:26 left before halftime.

SRU will play LeMoyne (N.Y.) College at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
