Police say dispute leaves woman with broken finger

Charges filed against boyfriend

Butler police arrested a man on charges he attacked his pregnant girlfriend during a domestic dispute Wednesday at her city apartment.

Joseph C. Strickland, 28, is jailed on felony assault charges in the altercation that left Amber Reges with a badly broken finger.

A police complaint shows Strickland with a Piedmont, S.C., address. But at his arraignment, the suspect claimed he lives with Reges at her home in the 300 block of Wilson Avenue.

Police suspect Strickland and Reges, who is four months pregnant, got into an argument about 1:25 p.m. During the altercation, Reges tried to leave the home through the back door, according to court documents.

But, she told police, the defendant jumped on her, knocking her to the floor. She eventually managed to get up and make a run for the front door.

Strickland, however, slammed his body against the door just as Reges opened it, documents said. The door slammed on her left pinky finger.

She screamed at the defendant that her hand was stuck in the door but he would not open it.

“She then pulled, instinctively, and tore the pad off the finger and fractured the bone,” a police affidavit said.

Police arrested Strickland at the home. District Judge Sue Haggerty arraigned him on charges of aggravated assault and unlawful restraint. He was placed in the Butler County Prison on $50,000 bail following arraignment.
