Steelers release Blount; Penguins' Maata to play tonight

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers and the Pittsburgh Penguins announced player moves today.

The Steelers have released running back LeGarrette Blount.

The move comes less than 24 hours after Blount left the field early in a victory over the Tennessee Titans on Monday night. Blount was in for just one play during Pittsburgh’s 27-24 win and watched teammate Le’Veon Bell run for 204 yards and a touchdown.

The Steelers signed Blount to a two-year deal in the offseason.

Blount ran into trouble off the field. He was cited for marijuana possession during a traffic stop in August.

Pittsburgh Penguins said defenseman Olli Maatta will play tonight against Montreal, two weeks after undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his thyroid.

The 20-year-old Maatta returned to the ice a few days after the procedure, and coach Mike Johnston says Maatta could have come back over the weekend but the team wanted to give him a few extra days to get his legs back.

Maatta says he just wanted to get the surgery over with so he could focus on hockey.
