Butler matmen in the movies

BUTLER TWP — Don Geibel and Dakoda Collins are two of the few area residents that had an opportunity to see the film “Foxcatcher” on the silver screen.

Collins and Geibel, who were extras in the movie filmed in the Pittsburgh area in 2013, saw it at a showing for cast and crew last Thursday at the AMC Lowes Waterfront 22 Theatre in Homestead.

Everyone else hoping to see the film based on the 1996 murder of Olympic wrestler Dave Schultz by the heir to the DuPont fortune, John DuPont will have to wait.

It has a limited release this weekend, opening in major markets only. There isn’t currently a date for the wide release.

That hasn’t stopped people from looking for footage online.

“Dakoda’s mom sent me a link to the New York Times site and the director was talking through a scene,” said Geibel, who coaches Butler’s junior high school wrestling team. “There was a scene where DuPont (played by Steve Carell) comes out and you can see me stretching in the background.”

“Foxcatcher” was originally scheduled to be released in December 2013, but was pushed back for production reasons.

The film debuted in May at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, where Bennett Miller won the Best Director Award. “Foxcatcher” stars Steve Carell, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo.

Former Butler wrestlers Blake Caudill, Alex Evanoff and T.J. McCance also did some work as extras.

Both Geibel and Collins, who is 21 and a student at Butler County Community College, enjoyed the movie.

“I thought it was great,” said Collins, who ranks 10th in Butler County history with 117 wins. “It started off slow, but then it picked up toward the middle and end.”

The wrestlers did scenes shot on a sod farm in Connoquenessing, a wrestling room in West Mifflin, a site near Mount Pleasant and in the gym at California (Pa.) University.

Geibel said he noticed a few things that got cut out of the movie.

A scene that featured DuPont’s character driving a tank into a pond was cut.

Geibel also took a group of 12 of his kids to a clinic that Mark Schultz did that didn’t make the movie.

“I forget what time of year it was, but they shot a shot at West Mifflin in this wrestling area,” Geibel said. “It was a clinic run by Mark Schultz, I was more bummed for the kids than anything.”

Collins is waiting until people see the movie to talk about it.

But he’s heard from a few friends.

“A few of my friends were watching T.V. and E-News and saw me in the background,” Collins said. “I haven’t talked to anyone about it.”
