Prison inmate found hanging is hospitalized
An inmate at the Butler County Prison was hospitalized after he was found Thursday afternoon hanging by the neck from a bed sheet in his cell.
David A. Gaiser, 42, of Connoquenessing was unconscious about 1:30 p.m. when a corrections officer making a routine check came upon his cell in the prison’s restricted housing unit, said Warden Rick Shaffer.
The inmate was reportedly in cardiac or respiratory arrest. The sheet was tied to the bunk and around Gaiser’s neck. He was alone in the cell at the time.
Another corrections officer, who is one of the prison’s first responders, used CPR to revive Gaiser.
An ambulance crew later got there and took over treatment. He was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital and later transferred to UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh, authorities said. His condition was not known this morning.
County detectives are investigating the incident.
Gaiser was booked in at the prison Tuesday after state police arrested him for a break-in that same day in Connoquenessing Township.
