Classic Carol SRU stages Christmas gem

Cole Vecchio plays Scrooge.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Ebenezer Scrooge, Bob Cratchet and the ghosts of Christmases past, present and future will take center stage when Slippery Rock University stages Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” Friday through Nov. 20.

The show opens at 7:30 p.m. Friday and will be presented at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday and at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 17 to 20. There is no show Nov. 15.

All productions are in the University Union.

The yuletide classic will be true to the original, but with a few twists, such as the appearance of Hell’s footmen during scenes with the Ghost of Christmas Present.

SRU is partnering with charities and will offer live caroling featuring Slippery Rock community members. Participants will collect donations for Toys for Tots and nonperishable food.

David Skeele, the show’s director and SRU theater professor who adapted the play, said the show borrows from the Asian theater concept in which every aspect happens in full view of the audience.

While this production does include a few scary elements, the show should be suitable for children, Skeele said.

The production includes theater majors Cole Vecchio of Bradford as Scrooge; Anthony Plumberg of Denver, Pa., as Marley; DeeDee Evans of Pittsburgh as The Ghost of Christmas Past; Jack Libengood of Apollo as The Ghost of Christmas Present and Kaitlin Cliber of Plum as The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.

The cast also includes Scot DiBello of Grove City and James Valentino of Elwood City.

David Maglicca of Slippery Rock plays Tiny Tim.

Matt Buzanoski, a criminology graduate student from Butler, plays Old Joe.

Tickets, which are $7 for students and $12 for general public, are available at the Smith Student Center Information Desk. For information, call 724-738-2015.
