Clay Twp man injured in mobile home fire

CLAY TWP — A man burned his hands trying to put out a fire at his mobile home early Sunday morning, authorities said.

Chad Brain was sleeping about 4:20 a.m. when he was awakened by the smell of smoke.

He got up and found fire coming from the area of the oil furnace in the hallway of his older style trailer on Shady Tree Lane off Old Muddy Creek Road, said Chief Reid Campbell of the West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department.

Brain called 911 and then tried what he could to snuff out of the blaze

“He attempted to put out the fire using pans of water,” Campbell said.

The fire eventually caught onto the floor. Brain crawled underneath the trailer and pulled down insulation, burning both hands in the process.

“His right hand was blistered,” Campbell said. Brain refused hospital treatment.

Although most of the fire was out by the time firefighters got there, they cut a hole in the floor to make sure the blaze had not spread further.

Damage is estimated at $10,000.

Brain is temporarily staying with his parents who live nearby.

Campbell blamed a malfunction in the furnace for the fire.

The Unionville volunteer Fire Department assisted West Sunbury firefighters, who returned to their station about 5:30 a.m.
