Karns City senior Emily LoPresti was named Most Valuable Player of the Upper Allegheny Valley Soccer League.

Megan McCartney, Brianna Brusamonti and Brittany Coyle were also chosen from the Gremlins, who led the league with four selections, as South Division All-Stars.

On the boys' side, Karns City had a league-wide high five chosen as UAVSL South Division All-Stars.

Spenser Myers, Noah Pollock, Tyler Pollock, Dave Olszak and John Garing were chosen from the Gremlins.

ERIE — The Butler County Community College men's and women's basketball teams suffered losses in their respective season openers Wednesday at Mercyhurst Northeast.Alex Alverez scored 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the men's 80-63 loss. Sean Stobert had 13 points and four assists, Austin Miller 10 points.Ashley Brehm scored 13 points, Lauren Bresnahan nine points to go with 10 rebounds in the BC3 women's 110-28 loss.

BUTLER TWP — Butler County Community College will host NASCAR driver Jimmy Weller from 7 to 9 p.m. Dec. 10 at the Succop Theater. Doors open at 6 p.m.Weller, from Hubbard Ohio, drives on the NASCAR Camping/World Truck series and has raced in the area at the Sharon and Lernerville Speedways.Tickets are $34 for regular admission and $19 for students under age 18. SLIPPERY ROCK — Rosie Knisley has been hired as an assistant women's lacrosse coach at Slippery Rock University.Knisley was a former assistant at Oberlin (Ohio) College, which finished 8-5 in Division III play last season. Before coaching, Knisley played field hockey for Roanoke (Va.) College and scored 16 goals during her senior year.

LORETTO — Saint Francis University offensive lineman Brody Maughan-Evanson, a Mars graduated, was chosen as first-team, all-district for the NCAA Capital One Academic All-District football team.Two Slippery Rock University linemen were also chosen. Kirk Nypaver and Kyle Henderson were named first-team. Nypaver has a 3.54 cumulative GPA and Henderson owns a 3.58 GPA.
