MANCHESTER — Republican lawmakers say Gov.-elect Tom Wolf must be able to compromise and curb growing costs if he wants to advance an ambitious agenda that includes a tax increase on the natural gas industry in a Legislature with huge GOP majorities.

Republicans delivered that message Wednesday as the newly elected Democrat thanked his supporters at a restaurant near his tiny south-central Pennsylvania hometown of Mount Wolf.

Wolf won nearly 55 percent of the vote in Tuesday’s election, making Republican Tom Corbett the first Pennsylvania governor to be denied a second term since governor’s have been allowed to run for re-election.

The businessman and first-time candidate wants to impose a new severance tax on natural-gas drilling and overhaul the income-tax to shift more of the cost onto wealthier taxpayers and cut school property taxes.

Wolf’s inauguration is Jan. 20.

Wolf to forgo salary, limit use of mansion

MANCHESTER — Gov.-elect Tom Wolf says he’ll forgo his salary as the state’s chief executive and that he and his wife plan to divide their time between their York County home and the governor’s residence in Harrisburg.

Speaking to reporters Wednesday, Wolf said he’ll give the salary to charity or return it to the state, depending on what the law allows.

The salary is currently $187,256.

The wealthy businessman says he adopted a similar policy during his two years as revenue secretary in the Rendell administration.

Wolf says he and his and wife will use both their family home and the state home while he is governor. Wolf says he considers himself a “citizen-politician” but that he also wants to become “a part of Harrisburg.”
